Our Abbreviated Success Meter

Disclaimer: this sample is an abbreviated version of the full course success measure and results may be imprecise.

What Your Results Mean

The Course Success Meter (CSM)© was designed to help course developers create effective, marketable and profitable online courses and eductaional platforms.

The much-abbreviated measure you just previewed evaluates only one aspect of a course, the "Accessibility" factor.  Since this was merely for sampling purposes, for ease of interpretation we provided preliminary results in the form of percentages that range between 0% and 100%. The higher the result, the more successful the factor or course.  An interpretive key is provided below.
If the result was:
  • 0%     accessibility is non-existent
  • 20%   accessibility is poor overall
  • 40%   accessibility is fair overall
  • 60%   accessibility is good overall
  • 80%   accessibility is very good overall
  • 100% accessibility is excellent overall

The Course Success Meter (CSM)© targets factors most critical to learners and would-be customers in choosing online courses. The goal is to help course developers create more successful, marketable and profitable online courses and educational programs.

The CSM can be used as a descriptive, predictive and/or prescriptive measure.  It rates 30 items across six (6) factors relative to industry best practices: Access; Structure; Content; Support: Progress; and Results.  The CSM provides insight into course construction, and is designed to answer two questions: 1) why didn’t something work? And 2) what can help make something work?  In some cases, the CSM is used to forecast success and helps answer the question: will it work? A six-point rating scale is used. Results range between 0 and 5.

The CSA benefits both developers-educators and customers-learners alike, by enhancing course content, learning platforms and marketing efforts; and reducing costs that occur as a result of course redevelopment, platform reconstruction or learner attrition.

A Summary Report is provided that aggregates the results of all six factors, highlights areas in need of improvement and offers recommendations.

Psychometrics: 128 participants were surveyed using one of four differently labeled Likert-type scales. No significant differences in means and reliability estimates were found. Scales differed however, on measures of variability. Greater item variance was associated with scales having fewer vs. more absolute endpoints.  These results are factored into all Skillify surveys and assessments.
Caveat: Skillify instruments are meant to be used as guidelines. Just as no one course can guarantee learner success; no one measure can be a precise predictor of results. Skillify recommends using multiple data points in making decisions about course content, structure and features.
